Looking for something fun and different to do this weekend? Swing by NEBG for a totally free, hands-on bonsai demo that’ll open your eyes to the magic of growing Bonsai your way. 

Whether you’re a total beginner or a bonsai nerd looking to level up, this is for you. 

What’s Happening: 

We’re kicking off with Peter Olson, who’ll show you how to take cuttings (and air layers) from a tree — maybe one from your yard, or that amazing tree you’ve always admired in your neighbor’s driveway — and turn it into a bonsai.

He’ll keep it simple: what to cut, when to do it, how to root it, and what kind of soil helps it thrive. 

Then it gets even cooler — Peter Keane is showing off grafting. Ever seen a tree with a killer trunk but kinda “meh” foliage? Peter will show you how to give it an upgrade, like transforming fast-growing San Jose Junipers with beautiful Shimpaku foliage.

He’ll even cover how to add branches where you want more structure and demonstrate how to Scion and Approach Graft during his demonstration.

Grow Your Own Bonsai Collection – Propagation Workshop with Peter Olson 

Time: 1:30 PM – 4:30 PM

Ready to get hands-on and start growing your own bonsai from scratch? Join Peter Olson for a fun and interactive workshop focused on bonsai propagation—perfect for both beginners and experienced enthusiasts. 

We’ll walk the NEBG nursery together as Peter teaches you how to take cuttings from a wide range of trees and turn them into future bonsai. You'll learn proper cutting techniques, soil prep, timing, and tricks for encouraging strong root growth. 

Each student will take home nine (9) cuttings to grow on—featuring a mix of indoor tropicals like Brazilian Rain Trees, Dwarf Jades, and Ficus, as well as cold-hardy species like Itoigawa Junipers, Arakawa Maples, and more. 

This is a fun, educational way to kickstart your very own bonsai collection. 

Foliage Upgrade: Grafting Workshop with Peter Keane

Time: 1:30 PM – 4:30 PM 
Cost: $125 per student | Limited to 8 students 

For those ready to take their bonsai skills to the next level, join Peter Keane in this advanced, hands-on workshop focused on scion grafting. 

You’ll work on a vigorous, prepped San Jose Juniper, known for its strong trunk and structure, and learn how to graft high-quality Itoigawa or Kishu foliage—two of the most desirable types in the bonsai world. 

Peter will guide you through each step of the process, from choosing and preparing scion material to proper technique and aftercare. 

Perfect for enthusiasts with some bonsai experience who want to refine their skills and elevate the quality of their trees.
