English Ivy 'hedera helix'

English ivy (Hedera helix) is an evergreen climbing plant native to most of Europe. As a bonsai, it offers unique characteristics:

  1. Foliage: Ivy has alternate 3-5 lobed leaves, which can vary in color and pattern depending on the variety.
  2. Growth stages: Ivy exhibits two distinct growth stages - juvenile (climbing) and adult. For bonsai, it's important to maintain the juvenile stage with lobed leaves by pinching out adult foliage.
  3. Suitability: The main challenge for ivy bonsai is leaf size. Careful variety selection and bonsai techniques can help manage this to some degree.

Cultivation and Care

  1. Placement: Ivy bonsai prefer partial shade and can be grown both indoors and outdoors.
  2. Watering: Regular watering is essential, especially during summer. The soil should not be allowed to dry out completely.
  3. Fertilizing: Use a balanced fertilizer every two weeks during the growing season, but avoid overfeeding to prevent overgrown leaves.
  4. Pruning: Frequent pruning is crucial. Pinch out new shoots and trim old foliage throughout the growing season to maintain shape and encourage dense growth.
  5. Wiring: Ivy can be wired year-round to achieve desired shapes, such as cascade or informal upright styles.
  6. Repotting: Repot in spring when necessary, using a well-draining soil mix.
